The Technology Behind Streaming
A newer technology that has revolutionized media technology and has had a great impact on society as a whole are streaming sites. A streaming site allows viewers to stream live video, along with watch the available videos and television shows. Viewers from around the world can attend a single event without leaving the comfort of their homes (Krings, 2022). They are easily accessible from any mobile device through a search engine or application. Streaming has changed how we consume media, engage in activities for leisure, and how we carry out business (Krings, 2022). It allows businesses to connect to their audience and gain new vieweres through streaming advertisements across different channels and platforms. Society was able to come together and having viewing parties while watching their favorite movies and television shows with their friends. Along with giving people a way to watch newer content without having to travel, at their own expense in their homes. Some popular streaming sites that is being referred to includes Hulu, Peacock, and Amazon Prime.
Many don’t realize the behind the scenes of streaming services, how a the technology works to give society a product that they love. The basics of an online video streaming setup consists of “1) Camera capturing RAW video, 2) Video is sent to the encoder via capture card or another hookup, 3) The encoder converts RAW video to a digital file, 4) Video is ingested into the online video platform, 5) The video is distributed from the online video platform to the video player via a content delivery network, and 6) The video player displays the stream on the viewer’s internet-enabled device” (Krings, 2022). Everything also depends on what specific tools you are using to determine the steps in how video streaming works. The four main types of streaming technology include streaming protocols, codecs, video players, and content delivery networks (Krings, 2022). With the technology, televisions also had to be upgraded in order to deliver the correct amount of pixels so the images would not show up blurry. Therefore pixels were evolved to 4K and 5K, allowing us to watch non blurry television shows and videos today. The benefits to video streaming includes decreases management complexity, reduced costs, better scalability, and improved playback (John, 2019). All in which created a technology that saved many during COVID-19 and allowed everyone to be united as one whole all watching their favorite shows and movies, but most importantly by updating everyone on the news.
