Getting Over the Communication Barrier with Technology

Image
There is always room for improvement in everything including technology, but sometimes it not the technology its about the person. Not everyone understands technology and that is okay, but there are also problems where those who are teaching about technology have some difficulty figuring out the best teaching style. “Several researchers such as Hengry Jenkins from MIT have found that the digital divide in the United States can now be more accurately characterized as a “participation gap.” This gap is growing between youth who have the opportunities and support to participate in rich digital media experiences through technology and the Internet, and those who are not given opportunities to access, create, and participate in the global digital media culture” (Norman, n.d.). We have to remember that not all generations grew up with the opportunity to learn about technology or need a little help. There is a trend in the workforce now, where by the year of 2024, roughly 25% of workers will ...

Out With The Old, Now With The New

Movies and technology used to create them have evolved over time, from first watching in a movie theater to now being able to view them from a mobile device or at home. There were several pioneers in the movie industry, creating groundbreaking technology such as The Lumière brothers, Walt Disney, Thomas Edison, Charles Chaplin, and many more. As a society, movies have become more popular than before. They have special effects that keep the audience interested and entertained, along with offering the same effects in a theater and at home. Movies can be viewed on any device and instead of getting a physical copy, customers can now get a digital copy that is all stored on their television. Pixels have greatly improved, offering 4K and 5K, along with there being more genres and subgenres of movies being created every day. Society is able to use movies as self-expression, art, and more, it has also created a variety of job opportunities. Expanding from not only movies but to news prod...

The Technology Behind Streaming

A newer technology that has revolutionized media technology and has had a great impact on society as a whole are streaming sites. A streaming site allows viewers to stream live video, along with watch the available videos and television shows. Viewers from around the world can attend a single event without leaving the comfort of their homes (Krings, 2022). They are easily accessible from any mobile device through a search engine or application. Three Warning Signs of Mobile Technology

Image
Mobile technology has revolutionized mobile communications and has been a great asset to the world, although with positives comes negatives. Mobile technology has created an environment that has made everything accessible, but it is making people lose basic skills and have an increase in health issues.  There has been a decrease in an important interpersonal skill and people being able to communicate in-person. Instead of talking to someone, they prefer to text or call first, because it's instantaneous and easier.  "Non-verbal communication, after all, (argued by some to represent up to 40% of our in-person communication) is completely absent" (9 Subtle Ways Technology Is Making Humanity Worse, 2019).  The younger generation does not know how to hold a full conversation, this could potentially impact their ability to get a job in the interview process. Especially with the hit of COVID in 2020, students were unable to interact in-person and be able to practice this skill o...

Social media has revolutionized the meaning of mobile communication, allowing consumers to communicate with one another at anytime from anywhere.  It has changed how news is delivered and consumed by audiences now more than before. “ Roughly four-in-ten Americans ages 65 and older (38%) often get news from a mobile device, around six times the share in 2013. In fact, people in this age group are now roughly as likely to get news from a mobile device as they are to get it from a desktop or laptop (38% vs. 34%)” (Walker, 2020). Every type of technology used to communicate can now be accessed through a mobile device and social media. Radio and Podcasts can be listened to from an application or a website at any time. Some applications include Spotify, iHeartRadio, Apple Music, and Pandora. Newspapers and magazines can be accessed in a business owned application or through the internet, along with television and streaming. Cable can be streamed through an application, along with consum...

A Timeline of Communication

Image
The timeline of communication and technology goes back two hundred years. Before the fourth millennium BCE, communication was based on writing and one of the earliest writing systems, cuneiform, was developed in Mesopotamia. (The History of Communications, n.d.). The entire evolution period began in 1914 and still evolves to today, currently in 2022.  Ancient Times The Ancient Times had simple communication methods of verbal and written. Man was limited in understanding and putting pieces together, speech originated around 500,000 BCE (Novak, 2019). Once they started to understand, they transitioned into written communication and communicated through symbols and images. The images were cave paintings and the scenes included hunting wild animals or stencils of human hands that evolved into pictograms and ideograms (Novak, 2019). 3500-3000 BCE: Cuneiform Cuneiform is a system of writing first developed by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia (Mark, 2022).  It was created to ...
